I don’t know about you, but at this time of year, my inner-editor tends to go a little crazy.

Easier said than done. This year’s been stressful, including death in the family, weird illnesses, and unplanned surgeries, which ate my time and energy faster than Pacman eats little white dots. (What were those things, anyway? Ghost-eggs?)

You know that feeling? The one where you’re grown-up only in your head? This can be especially hard as a creator. Those of us who put our work out there are subjected to bad reviews as well as good, to criticism that harms instead of builds.

I’ve learned a few things that helped me to get past that feeling, and I want to share them with you.

My taste is not everyone’s.

I will never please everybody with what I create, but that’s only fair because I don’t like everything created by others, either.

This means it’s okay if I get bad reviews, or can’t meet my word-count goal, or have to scrap some chapters in editing.

It’s okay. And it’s okay because what I have to offer is DIFFERENT from what everybody else has to offer.

But I’ve seen feet before!

My ideas are not unique. Neither are yours. Nobody’s is.

The key is not producing brand-new ideas. The key is HOW we present them.

Neil Gaiman put it best in this video. Here’s a partial transcript:

“Nobody gets to be you except you. Nobody has your point of view except you. Nobody gets to bring to the world the things that you get to bring to the world – uniquely get to bring to the world – except you.None of those people [in context, other artists] is you, and none of those people is going to make the art that you are going to make. None of them is going to change the world in the way that you could change it.”(Neil Gaiman in that video you really ought to watch.)

Keep Chewing

So the next time you feel overwhelmed, that you’ve bitten off more than you can chew, don’t give up.

Remember that what you bring to the table is uniquely yours.

If you keep working at it, keep honing it, keep striving for excellence, you’ll eventually succeed.

He’s cute, which is what I wanted, and yet there’s beauty here: the symmetry of his hair and the water are FANTASTIC.Also, his toes are incredibly adorable.

This magnificent piece of work was drawn by Celine Chapus, the artist of Purple Top Hat.com. She shows in conventions all around the country, is active onFacebook and Twitter, and takescommissions (WOOHOO).

You’ll definitely be seeing more from her soon.
