Links, Just Because

by Ruthanne on 09/17/2009

Heading out to dinner shortly, but first, here are a ton of links, just for fun.

Blind woman sees with tooth implant. Whoa.

What to expect from an agent-author agreement.

Two fantastic posts here: How To Be Professional, and How to Ruin Your Online Reputation. It cannot be emphasized enough that agents these days WILL Google your name. Make sure there’s nothing negative for them to find.

Interesting thoughts on the much-vaunted sales of The Lost Symbol.  That is to say, Kindle vs. Print.

China’s “cancer villages.” Eeeeuuaaaaaaugh.

This is just… weird. Monster washes up on shore.

And last but not least, I managed to take some truly fantastic photos of a dragonfly! Go ahead and click, and view full size. The detail of his (her?) wings amazed me.

Can I get your opinion? Apparently the theme I chose for the blog doesn’t include apostrophe’s in the post titles. http://www.michellecarras.com/blog Do you think I should use a different theme? I really do think it looks unprofessional but have no idea how to add an apostrophe.

Hey, I’m so glad the links are helpful to you! That’s really great to hear.

WordPress is definitely a great way to go, though it’s dealing with PHP instead of HTML. I actually learned to design just by fooling around. I did “view:source” on sites I liked, found an HTML text editor (it was Geocities way back then), and began to play with things until I could figure out just what each bit of code did.

This is, admittedly, the long way around. :D

The best way to learn is 1. find how-to sites – there are TONS that give you the basics for HTML and CSS (html = what makes it work. css = what makes it pretty.) If you can get hold of a program like Dreamweaver or something, then you’ll be in great shape.

Hmmm… I’m thinking you’re editing the blog as we speak, because I got a blank page. :D I’ll try again later!

Bah, WordPress is making me crazy. I fooled around with it for hours, made what I thought were appropriate changes to the page locations using Simple Scripts with my hosting service and when I came back the theme was gone! I’ve got a bit of volunteering to do this week in addition to my writing, but I will see if I have the patience to get back to the how-to sites. In the meantime, I’d still appreciate if you would look at what I have so far: peacefulbeingbalance.blogspot.com. I’m doing another round robin story and I’d love your input!

Thanks again for all the links; they’re great!

    Hi Ruthanne,

Thanks for the great links! Your blog is helpful as always. I’m still working on trying to get a website going and it’s not as easy as I thought! I started working with this program Hypercard when hypertext first got going in the 80′s, but now it’s so complicated. So I imported my blog to WordPress, since people have been telling me that has good functionality for building websites, and now I’m trying to figure out how to make different pages and link them and such. How did you learn to do this? Can you recommend any books, or did you take courses?

Keep the links and posts coming!

    Michelle
